Committees

Much of the work of the EPIIC Program is carried out by the student committees.   Each Colloquium member ranks the committees in order of preference and is assigned to one Content and one Support committee for the duration of the year.

Content committees focus on research and project-based learning. Support committees offer specialized assistance in each of the other committees' projects.   While the program staff reconsiders the committee designations each year based on feedback from the students, a typical year might look something like this:

CONTENT COMMITTEES:

Program Committee

The committee is responsible for planning and organizing the symposium weekend. Members research the full range of the topic, receive input from the full colloquium, and attempt to highlight the most pressing issues within the topic at the symposium.

Special Events Committee

The committee is responsible for planning and organizing special events throughout the year. Often it creates interdisciplinary events that bring issues like art, music, science, sport, and faith into contact with international issues.

Multimedia Committee

The committee is responsible for researching and creating a multimedia package, (usually a CD-ROM), on a specific aspect of the year's topic. The multimedia project can be sent to schools or to professional institutions for use as a resource. Past topics for the CD-ROM have included "Artificial Life" (1995) and "Complex Humanitarian Emergencies" (1998).

Video Committee

The committee is responsible for researching and filming the annual video, which is shown at the opening of the symposium weekend. Members interview specialists on camera, and attempt to clarify the connections between different parts of the topic as an introduction to the weekend's activities.

Inquiry Committee

The committee is responsible for the high school outreach program, Inquiry. In conjunction with Inquiry Director Heather Barry, they assign Colloquium members to mentor the Boston-area schools and act as a resource for students who might have little experience working with youth. The committee plans and organizes the Inquiry Simulation Weekend.

SUPPORT COMMITTEES:

Logistics Committee

The committee provides for the details of every event, reserving rooms, A/V equipment, arranging travel schedules, ensuring catering, selling tickets, hiring extra assistants for major events.

Public Relations Committee

The committee is responsible for publicizing each event, both to the Tufts University community and to the greater Boston area. Ways of doing this range from simple posters to more grandiose methods.
